"Q: How important was it to have Howard Jacobs, an expert in doping cases, working as your attorney?
A: There’s not many people in the world that do it. There are only 5-6 people who are specialists in doping, and he was the best. He was great, and I’m really fortunate to have had him on my side." [Diana Taurasi in the Arizona Republic Newspaper, February 18, 2011]
I have represented over 75 athletes in doping cases in the last nine years. I have handled most of the high profile doping cases in the Olympic Movement during that time period to present. Notable past cases include the representation of basketball star Diana Taurasi, Olympic track & field champion Lashawn Merritt, swimming world record holder Jessica Hardy, 2006 Tour de France champion Floyd Landis, former 100 meter world record holder Tim Montgomery, Olympic cycling champion Tyler Hamilton, sprinter Marion Jones, former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk, America's Cup sailor Simon Daubney, and three of the four U.S. track and field athletes who tested positive for the designer steroid tetrahydragestrinone ("THG").
I am well respected by anti-doping organizations for my subject knowledge and my passionate defense of athletes accused of doping. For those athletes who have received suspensions, approximately 75% have received reduced suspensions.
I am generally regarded as the leading athlete advocate in doping matters in the United States and am frequently contacted by major media organizations for my opinion on doping matters. As a result of my extensive involvement in this area, I have come to believe that it is impossible for an attorney to be effective as a part-time doping lawyer.
